While I am primarily a composer now, a large portion of my adult life was spent as a jazz drummer. After leaving the University of Colorado two years into a Bachelors degree in percussion, I moved to Denver to try out my luck. For the next two-and-a-half years I performed with the jazz-fusion band AOA, the great avant-garde saxophonist Marvin Freeman (who played with Rashied Ali), and other excellent musicians including Ron Miles, Joe Lukasik, Geoff Cleveland, and Artie Moore.
In 1994 I decided to move to the east coast, and spent two semesters at William Paterson College (now University) studying with Horacee Arnold, and performing with the pianist Anat Fort among others. After moving back to Colorado, I became a member of the Boulder Creative Music Ensemble with Fred Hess, Ron Miles, Glen Nitta, Mark Harris, and Kent McLagan.
In 1997 I became a member of Ron Miles's band, and for the next few years we played at several major jazz festivals, including the Knitting Factory (with Bill Frisell), Monterey, and Santa Fe.
